For me it has been an enormous satisfaction to have been able to give the gift of life.
One day I decided to become a bone marrow donor, inspired by the great Pablo Raéz.
After reading about it and gaining all the information I needed, I was aware that being compatible with someone was a slim possibility, but you’ll never know if you don’t try.
With the best of luck my day came. I got a call from the Foundation and I turned out to be a match for a patient somewhere in the world. All this happened at a time that was not easy, during the early and most critical days of the State of Alarm, but someone needed me and I had to do it.
With many setbacks of flights, permits, distances, the use of masks, extreme disinfection etc., the day arrived.
There is no transplant centre in my area, so I had to travel to another island for consultations, pre-testing and collecting medication.
But finally, everything worked out and I did the bone marrow donation on 17 March, ready for everything to go well.
The donation took somewhat longer than usual due to the number of haematopoietic progenitors requested, and it took two days to obtain the required amount. None of this mattered because someone needed it.
I am proud of what I did and I would do it again without a doubt, even more so with the attention, care and help from the staff at the hospital and at the Josep Carreras Foundation. Thank you!
