On 8 April 2019, at the age of 29, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of blood cancer. It was all because of a blood test I asked for because I was feeling very tired, I was having headaches, dizziness and, the day before the test, I noticed some pain in my spleen. The diagnosis was a shock as I have always been a person who never got sick and had no bad habits. Life changed in a split second: I had to change my office, my place of work, for the hospital.
During those months I underwent several rounds of chemo, always with complications in between because I had no defences. Between one thing and another, I spent the same amount of time in hospital as I did at home.
Luckily, I achieved complete remission of the disease and they decided to give me a bone marrow transplant, thanks to an anonymous donor located by the Foundation’s Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
These times were very hard, but I always tried to keep a smile on my face and to be grateful for every day of my life.
Thanks also to the Foundation for the EXCELLENT work you do and for helping to provide us with the chance to live a new life.
Lastly, I would like to encourage everyone to become a bone marrow donor, which is essential for all of us who are fighting leukaemia, so we have a chance to win.
