Hello! I’m José María, I’m 11 years old and I’m the “little one” of my big family. I am known for being a loving, happy, and UNSTOPPABLE child.
When I was 5 years old, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a very common blood cancer in children, which is also more prevalent in people with Down Syndrome like me.
In order to cure myself, I started chemotherapy sessions, but to my misfortune, the doctors found that my disease did not go away. Even so, we did not give up, and luckily, in 2018 I was able to access a pioneering CAR-T immunotherapy clinical trial in Spain. They re-engineered the “good” cells in my body, specifically my T-lymphocytes, to be able to fight this cancer. Impressive, isn’t it?
My doctors have seen that it is working well so far, which is fantastic news for me, as I can continue to have fun with my siblings.
José María
